The Perfect Tear paper towel holder eliminates waste by allowing exactly the desired number of paper towel sheets to be torn off the roll with just one hand. The secret lies in the secure, horizontally wall-mounted base and the ratchet system inside the towel holder. By allowing the roll to make incremental turns in just one direction, the ratchet holds the roll steady during pulling and tearing, thus preventing unraveling.

Three parts come with this towel holder: a weighted chrome arm that protrudes five inches from the wall (two screw holes are on a two-inch center; two 1-1/8-inch screws and two plastic sleeves are included); an 11-inch metal dowel that screws into the arm and features a bullet-shape tip; and a flexible wire cage through which the central dowel passes that conforms to the inside cardboard tube of a paper towel roll. The dowel and cage attach to the arm without tools, but a Phillips-head screwdriver (and possibly a drill) is needed for the wall-mounting. I have installed this under a cabinet in the kitchen, and it is exactly what I was looking for. No loose sheets hanging down on the counter getting dirty, and the ratchet noise is not loud at all. Easiest I have found to load and unload rolls, too.

The paper towel holder does it's job at limiting how many paper towels are pulled but the ratchet device is really loud in our office.

This paper towel rack is simply the best one made. I only wish other manufacturers made such great, inexpensive products. 1. It's well built (mostly metal parts). It has no flimsy "ears" to break. 2. Change out rolls in a second by simply sliding roll over spring-tension spindle. 3. Rolls are dispensed under slight ratchet tension (patented). ...no more wasted handfuls of towels.

This towel holder gets points for sleekness/stylishness, ease of adding a new roll of paper (and of course removing a spent roll), and for the resistance it provides so that you don't pull too many towels out at once. That said, if your towels aren't tough enough, the resistance will keep your wet hands from pulling out a new towel and you'll be left with just the wet pieces you were able to tear away from a full sheet. Just keep that in mind when deciding what thickness towel to purchase and when figuring out how you grab the towel to minimize this problem. Given how annoying most towel holders are (clunky, ugly, space-takers, unwieldy roll replacement process), this is a minor gripe, and this inexpensive holder deserves your consideration.
